To date, Mexico is the only country that has reported deaths from the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, most commonly known around the world and reported as swine flu.
Although this is the case, according to the latest WHO update, 15 countries have reported cases amounting to 615 confirmed. The World Health Organization is still reporting that there is no danger from eating well cooked pork meat and are not recommending that borders be closed or that travel to countries reporting infections are limited.
Today I've travelled to Edinburgh for the bank holiday weekend and will be chilling out, but will still try to keep one eye on the swine flu stories are they are being reported. We went to two stores today to see whether we could find a copy of Outbreak, howver both were completely sold out.
I am still concerned about travelling on public transport, but the thing is that there has been only one confirmed death from this disease outside of Mexico, and I am inclined to believe that many of us, whilst we may contract it, won't die from it.. There are sufficient supplies of anti-virals available in the UK to treat a flu outbreak, and though it's not a cure, reports seem to suggest that if you're reasonably fit and catch the symptoms early, you're able to get through without much risk to life.
I am worried about people in other parts of the world, especially in poorer countries, where supplies of the medication may not be so plentiful. I am also worried about people who are more vulnerable, those with depressed immune systems or those with undeveloped systems who won't be able to fight the infection as effectively, they are still at risk in my opinion, especially if there is a large outbreak.
